District Overview

Reading/Literature:Students will read, understand, interpret, appreciate and comprehend a wide variety of texts and literature, using appropriate strategies.
Grammar:Students will demonstrate use of basic English conventions.
Writing:Students will write to communicate for various purposes and audiences.
Research:Students will identify and investigate issues, topics, and problems.
Speaking and Listening:Students will listen actively and speak effectively in a variety of situations.

Grades K-5 Overview

Reading/Literature:Students experience leveled reading through a variety of fiction and non-fiction materials.
Students respond to their reading through different modes of communication.
Grammar:Students will acquire grammar skills through independent practice of mechanics and usage.
Writing:Students write letters, essays, stories, poems and forms of communication.
Research:Students will be exposed to a variety of research materials to gather information.
Speaking and Listening:Students listen to read-aloud, tapes, and oral presentation.
Students practice speaking skills by doing oral presentations, plays, choral reading, and other everyday communication situations.

Grades 6-8 Overview

Reading/Literature:Students will build comprehension skills using a variety of genres and literacy elements.
Grammar:Students will demonstrate use of basic English conventions through reading and writing.
Writing:Students will write to communicate for various purposes and audiences throughout the middle school curriculum using the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, reviewing, editing, and publishing).
Research:Students will utilize various resources in order to investigate topics and issues to produce a final product.
Speaking and Listening:Students will listen actively and give effective oral presentations, recitations, and dramatic readings in all aspects of the middle school curriculum.

Grades 9-12 Overview

Reading/Literature:Students will read age-appropriate material with fluency and accuracy. Students will interpret, summarize, and make predictions regarding text as well as critically evaluate and analyze material in order to explain their interpretation of it.
Grammar:Students are expected to use Standard English to produce grammatically correct documents
Writing:Students will write for real or potentially real situations using Standard English that exhibits a range of writing techniques while incorporating contemporary technology to produce documents for publication.
Research:Using multiple forms of data, students will gather and synthesize information from a variety of primary and secondary sources and organize it into a formal research project.
Speaking and Listening:Students will apply listening skills to a variety of settings.
Students will deliver planned and impromptu oral presentations using verbal and non-verbal messages to convey results of research, projects, or literature studies to a variety of audiences.

Helping Your Child With Reading And Writing

Keep a reading log.Make a list of books read (title and author). Talk to your child about what he or she read.
Encourage Reading.Have books around the house. Set a good example by reading yourself and making reading a fun, free-time activity.
Collect Writing Samples.Keep copies of what your child writes. Sit down together with their writing and talk about it.
Encourage writing for
non-school purposes.
Writing for pleasure (poems, stories, diaries) or communication (letters to friends and relatives) helps build writing skills.
