MAP MAKING IN 3-3

After studying about map skills such as directions, symbols, and map keys, third graders in Mrs. Dougherty and Miss Andel’s class then created their own town and maps.

Mobile Dentist/Smile Program

It’s not too late to register your child for a dental exam with the Mobile Dentists/Smile Program. They will be coming to Haskin School on October 16th and 17th. Permission forms were sent home with your child. Reminder: All students enrolled in kindergarten, second, and sixth grades are required to provide proof of a complete dental exam by May 15, 2009. Thank you.

DeKalb County Special Education Association

Sandwich C.U.S.D. is a member of the DCSEA (DeKalb County Special Education Association). In the past, DCSEA provided various special education programs and services to its member districts. Five years ago the DCSEA Governing Board made the decision for its member districts to decentralize services. This decision initiated the process of bringing programs and direct services back into the individual districts. In April of 2008, the Governing Board of DCSEA voted to dissolve the association. Beginning July 2009, Sandwich will serve special education students independent of a cooperative association. We do not anticipate any changes in services to our district as a result of this action since we already provide our own programs and services. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Director, Mrs. Sanda Collins at scollins@kidsroe.org or 815-786-6851.

Second Graders Use Book Caddies

Second graders in Mrs. Walter’s, Miss Eccles’, Mrs. Gomes’ and Mr. Mager’s classes recently filled their new book caddies with carefully selected “good-fit” books to read during their independent and buddy read times. Second graders read self-selected books daily, and they have been learning how to choose books that are just right for them. They have learned that when choosing a book, they need to think about their purpose for reading, their personal interests, and whether or not they can read and understand most of the words in the book. Thanks to a generous donation from HOP, each student has a plastic book caddy in which to store his or her good-fit books!

Kindergarten Vision Examination Reminder

Public Act 95-671, effective January 1, 2008, requires that all children enrolling in kindergarten in a public, private or parochial school and any student enrolling for the first time in public, private or parochial school shall have an eye examination. The vision examination report/waiver form should be on file with your child’s school by October 15th of the current school year. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact your school nurse.

EARLY DISMISSAL

On Friday, October 10, we will have an 11:10 dismissal. There will be no afternoon Pre-K on that day.
Also, there will be no school on October 13 for Columbus Day.

Haskin Third Graders Learn About Safety

After reading Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann, Haskin’s third graders interviewed school personnel to learn about more school related safety tips. After the interview, the students wrote out and illustrated the safety tips. The safety tips are now hanging in the hall so the entire school can read and use them.

Target Makes School Fundraising Easy

Haskin is already benefiting from Target’s take Charge of Education, one of the easiest ways to raise funds for anything our school needs.  When school supporters enroll and use their REDcard, Target donates up to 1% of every purchase made with their REDcard to our school. It does not cost you anything to participate. All you need to do is designate our school online at Target.com/tcoe or call 1-800-316-6142.

VISION AND HEARING SCREENING

Each school year the DeKalb County Health Department conducts vision/hearing screenings for Sandwich District #430 schools in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Illinois Dept. of Public Health. Vision screening will be done as mandated for the following children: Preschool, Kindergarten, 2nd, 8th, special education students, new/transfer students, and other concerns. Hearing screenings will be done for Preschool, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, special education students, new/transfer students, and any other concerns. Screenings will be done at Haskin on Nov. 5, 2008 and rescreening on Nov. 17, 2008.

Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months and that evaluation is on file at the school. This notice is not a permission to test and is not required to be returned. Vision screening is not an option. If a vision examination report is not on file at the school for your child, your child in the mandated age/grade/group will be screened per Public Act 093-0504 effective January 1, 2004. If you have any questions, you may contact the school nurse.

FIRST GRADE VISITS HONEY HILL ORCHARD

The first graders enjoyed a fun morning at Honey Hill Orchard on Friday, September 26. They learned how honeybees make honey, their importance on the orchard, and how they pollinate the apple trees. The beekeepers wear a lot of protection so they don’t get stung! The first graders also learned how the apples are picked, sorted, and stored in a huge refrigerator until they are sold. The hayride around the orchard was very bumpy! Each first grader was able to pick an apple to bring home. The best part of the morning was enjoying fresh apple cider and eating a warm apple cider donut.
