Happy 2008! Our kindergarteners continue to buzz right along. I am so proud of all of the progress they are making in all areas!

In reading, we are working on all of our letters, sounds, and sight words.  The children have been working hard on learning how to read by using beginning sounds, picture clues, finding chunks in words, skipping the word to see what makes sense, and using context clues. The children are also doing a wonderful job with their comprehension strategies. They are making connections, using mental imaging, inferring, synthesizing, and asking questions.  The children enjoy reading aloud to the class and reading at DEAR time. We have also read some great chapter books. Junie B Jones is a favorite.

In math, we are learning number sense, adding, subtracting, geometry solids, fractions and figuring out word problems. The children love to rotate through math centers to practice and apply their learning.  Our daily calendar activities also encompass many math skills such as money, telling time, counting, and number recognition.

Writers Workshop is a favorite time of day when the children are able to write and make their own books.  The children are able to write freely and learn how to spell words the best they can with their brave spelling.

In Science and Social Studies we are going to be learning about Martin Luther King, Washington, and Lincoln. We will be learning about goldfish, guppies, pill bugs, sow bugs, red worms, night crawlers, caterpillars, and butterflies.
