We are coming out of our shells in Mrs. Mathis’ Kindergarten class!  Everyone is enjoying being in school all day. The children are doing a wonderful job of learning our routines and schedules.

In reading, we are working on rhyming words, beginning and ending sounds, letter recognition, learning our names and how to write our names. The children look forward to finding out who our star student is for the day. It is a great way to learn about each other and each child is a special star.   The children are enjoying being read to and they also love our daily DEAR time. Some of our favorite books are the Junie B Jones series, The Kissing Hand, Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar, Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?  And I’m Gonna Like Me just to name a few.  We are also working on our reading strategies and learning what it takes to become a good reader.

In math, we are working on direction words, counting, sorting, graphing, patterning, number recognition, one to one correspondence, and writing numbers. The children really love working in our math centers. We have all of the skills in math centers that our children are able to rotate to.

In Science and Social Studies we have been working on school environment, manners, classroom expectations, and how to get along with others. We have begun a unit called All About Me. We will be doing different activities to help all of us get to know each other.

A favorite time of day is our Center time. The children are able to make choices in our block area, art area, housekeeping area, writing area, listening area, math area, reading area, and science area.
