We are using a phonemic awarness program from Michael Heggerty, Ed.D. There are five or six sections for each day. For first and second grade the sections go from rhyming, identifying words that start with the same blends, hearing sounds and putting them together to make a word, and identifying the middle sound in a word. In third grade the students are also using Michael Heggerty. The sections they work on are segmenting (taking words apart and telling how many sounds they hear), substituting blends, adding a sound onto a word, and deleting parts of words and telling what is left. The first and second graders like using Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down for the rhyming parts. The third grade students like being able to use their heads and figure out how many sounds they hear in a word. They use their fingers and close their eyes to try and figure out the answer.
