Grades K-3 Overview

Political Systems: Students will recognize symbols of America. They will experience an election.
Economic Systems: Students will understand services, resources, needs, and wants.
History: Students will understand the significance of major holidays.
Geography: Students will understand how to use a map and locate important places.
Social Systems: Students will understand the importance of various roles in the community.

Grades 4-5 Overview

  • Students will use the five fundamental themes of geography to study the five regions of the United States.
  • Students will be exposed to the levels and branches of government.
  • Students will be introduced to basic economic terms.
  • Students will focus on Illinois history and geography.
  • Students at this grade level will study American History from early colonization through the American Civil War.
  • Students will use non-fiction text, maps, charts and graphs, diagrams, and political cartoons to enhance their understanding of the causes and events of our history and the reactions of early Americans to their surroundings and the events in their world.
  • Students will also learn how the decisions made by early Americans set down a code of nationalism that modern day Americans follow today.

Grades 6-8 Overview

Political Systems: Students will recognize symbols of America. They will experience an election. Students will understand the basic political system in Illinois.
Economic Systems: Students will understand services, resources, needs, wants. Students will understand basic economic terms.
History: Students will understand the significance of major holidays and events.
Geography: Students will understand how to use a map and locate important places. Students will understand the five fundamental themes of geography and apply these to the levels and branches of government.
Social Systems: Students will understand the importance of various roles in the community.

Grades 9-12 Overview

Political Systems: Students will be able to recognize the various political parties, election processes and civic responsibilities of a citizen. Understand the role of special interest groups in foreign policies.
Economic Systems: Understand the basics of supply and demand, trade, distribution of goods and effects of shortages worldwide and nationally.
History: Students will be able to relate the history of the United States to the main era and identify key individuals who impacted American history. Students will be able to relate historical events to themselves personally.
Geography: Identify all fifty states and major bodies of water. Students can identify the 7 continents and locate other countries around the world.
Social Systems: Students will understand the impact of culture and how it affects their life. Students will identify how cultures develop.
